43-YEAR-OLD MAKING BIG STRIDES TO ELITE STATUS

Age means little to Susan Loken. The 43-year-old Ahwatukee Foothills mother of three only has to refer to Francie Larrieu Smith, and all the encouragement she needs to be a major American marathoner rests there.
Smith was 39 when she not only qualified for the Olympics but made the team and finished 12th in Barcelona in 1992.
Although Loken is not concerned about repeating Smith’s feat, she has already made significant steps to be among the elite after finishing fifth in this year’s P.F. Chang’s Rock ’n’ Roll Arizona Marathon in a time of 2 hours, 47 minutes and 9 seconds.
Just three months ago, she successfully defended her USA Masters marathon title.
